This new book is an extension and updating of the book of the
same title first published in 1976. The first edition of the
book continues to be widely acclaimed internationally. This
book looks much more closely at the development of speech in
the context of spoken language. It incorporates informal strategies
for promoting spoken language development that are appropriate
for use with modern technology such as digital hearing aids
and cochlear implants. At the same time, it preserves descriptions
of techniques for developing speech in children for whom digital
hearing aids and cochlear implants do not or cannot compensate
adequately for particular levels of hearing loss. Considerable
emphasis is placed on the ongoing evaluation of speech in the
context of spoken language and part of this emphasis is provided
